“Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery.”

a few quick reviews
A couple reviews of a couple things I’ve seen/heard lately:
1. Kanye West – 808s and Heartbreaks:
I was pretty skeptical of the poppier sound before I actually heard the album, but I’ve been listening non-stop for a few days now. I’m not sure yet if it rises to Graduation-esque heights, but I really, really liked that record. This one is more somber, but still really interesting. Highlights: “See You in My Nightmares,” “Street Lights,” and especially “Coldest Winter.”
2. Four Christmases
There are a couple moments in the movie that are truly funny, but I think I may have wasted my $7.50. The emotional aspect was kind of weird and forced, and Vince Vaughn is (even more now) someone that I don’t particularly enjoy watching.
3. Slumdog Millionaire
I liked it a lot. The game show format is kind of strange for this type of movie, but it works. Side note: A bunch of things I’ve read talk about how accessible it makes modern India to the average American, but is the average American going to see this film? At any rate, good acting and an interesting plot.
There are probably more things to talk about, but I’m drawing a blank. Maybe later.

russia and the olympics
I think it’s kind of funny that people are upset that Russia decided to make its move on Georgia during the Olympic games. Russia’s actions are already contrary to state opinion of every major world power. Does the fact that the invasion came on opening night really make it at that much worse in the West’s eyes, in relative terms?

brendan canning
I am so excited for this:
“Something for All of Us… is Canning’s entry into the series, and it’s due July 22 (not May 27 as previously reported) in North America from Arts&Crafts.”
It’s being released under the BSS presents format, similar to Kevin Drew’s album. Listen to the mp3 (on that page) from the album. It’s so good.

“The real incomes of middle-class families grew more than twice as fast under Democratic presidents as they did under Republican presidents. Even more remarkable, the real incomes of working-poor families (at the 20th percentile of the income distribution) grew six times as fast when Democrats held the White House.” (nytimes.com)

- 2063 AD: The booklet 2063 A.D. was published by General Dynamics Astronautics, and placed into a time capsule in July of 1963. It is believed that only 200 copies were ever printed. The 50 page book contains predictions by scientists, politicians, astronauts and military commanders about the state of space exploration in the year 2063. This edition is a reprint made from scans of the original 1963 book.
